Aresnal Win Again! First Place in English Premier League!

October 1st, 2007 By: Pe Le

The Arsenal Gunners came out with a 1-0 result at Upton Park, when they were visitors to West Ham United over the weekend. Arsenal’s win gives them thier 6th win of the season, and they still remain undefeated. The only “blemish” in their championship campaign for the 2007-08 English Premier League season was a 1-1 draw with the Blackburn Rovers ealrier this season.

The lone goal of the game came in the 13th minute when Aresnal’s Emmanuel Adebayor took the ball down the right flank, and dropped it for Alexander Hleb, who crossed it over to the far post where Robin van Persie glanced a header past West Ham United keeper Rob Green. Green was able to push the ball, but not enough to keep it past the net, giving Arsenal a 1-0 advantage early in the match.

Robin van Persie’s goal is his 3rd of the season. The leading goal scorer so far in the 2007-08 English Premier League is Emmanuel Adebayor, who is Robin van Persie’s team mate in Arsenal.Arsenal’s Alexander Hleb injured in the match against West Ham United

Both teams had their chances. West Ham United’s best chance came from former Arsenal player Freddie Ljungberg, but he was unfortunate to be flagged offside. The match was very competitive, and it could’ve gone either way with all the scoring opportunities being created. Arsenal had the better attempts on goal, but the heroics of West Ham keeper Rob Green kept the scoreline at bay. Eventually, Arsenal held on to collect all 3 points and maintain their position at the top of the English Premier League with 19 points. Manchester United trails behind Arsenal at the second spot of the English Premier League standings with 17 points, following a 1-0 win at Birmingham City.

Arsenal head coach Arsene Wenger comment regarding their win over West Ham United by saying, “There’s room for improvement but I am very proud of what the team is achieving at the moment. I believe we can challenge. We are very young, but we have to show that we can eke out results.”

West Ham United head coach Alan Curbishley commented, “We competed as well as we could and we’re disappointed we couldn’t get back in it. If we had, it would have been anyone’s match, but Arsenal defended very well and got bodies in the way.”

West Ham United hope for a better result in their next Premiership match when they visit Villa Park to challenge Aston Villa. Aston Villa and West Ham United are both tied in the Premiership standings with 10 points each. However, Aston Villa look to be favorites because of the home pitch advantage at Villa Park.

Meanwhile, Arsenal looks to improve their championship campaign of the 2007-08 English Premier League season when they play hosts to Sunderland at the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal are favorites to win the match, considering their fine form. However, they may not have the services of Alexander Hleb, who was injured late in the match against West Ham United and had to be carried off the pitch in a stretcher.

Sunderland have yet to post a win since their 2-1 home win against Reading last September 15.
