Arsenal On Top Of English Premier League

September 24th, 2007 By: Pe Le

Arsenal FC are at the top of the English Premier League with 16 points in only 6 matches played. Their most recent victory was a 5-0 win over Derby County on the Arsenal home pitch at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger was definitely in high spirits as his side delivered 5 impressive goals against Derby County, giving proof that Arsenal is ready to show the world some quality football.

“We kept a good concentration on the quality of our game. It was really enjoyable to watch.” said Arsene Wenger.

Arsenal Celebrates Cesc Fabregas’ GoalThe beginning of the season seemed bleak for Arsenal fans, who gave up their star striker Thierry Henry to Spanish club Barcelona. Arsenal didn’t have Thierry Henry last season when the French striker was side-lined for most of the season due to injuries. It seemed that Arsenal was on an adjustment period and waiting for the other players to step up their game with the absence of Thierry Henry. In this 2007-08 English Premier League season, Arsenal has shown the world that they can win without Thierry Henry.

It took Arsenal only 10 minutes to find the back of the net, when Abou Diaby sidestepped two Derby County defenders on the edge of the penalty area before he rocketed an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net. Arsenal were dominant throughout the match with little possession being given to Derby County. Arsenal’s offense always seemed to end up with an attempt at the Derby County goal, and it was just a matter of time before some of the shots on goal gave Arsenal points on the scoreboard.

The second goal of Arsenal came in the 25th minute when Arsenal Emmanuel Adebayor received a pass from midfielder Cesc Fabregas. Adebayor ran clear of the Derby County defenders, dribbled around Derby County keeper Stephen Bywater, and fired a shot into the back of the net to put Arsenal up 2-0.

On the start of the 2nd half, Derby captain Matt Oakley was charged with a penalty for pulling back Arsenal forward Eduardo da Silva inside the penalty area. Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor stepped up to take the spot kick, and beat Derby keeper Stephen Bywater to score his 2nd goal of the match, and the third for Arsenal.

In the 70th minute, Cesc Fabregas scored another goal for Arsenal with a whopping strike from 20 meters out to increase the goal difference to 4-0. 10 minutes after, Adebayor chested down a long ball and sidefooted the ball in the back of the Derby County, completing Adebayor’s hat trick and giving Arsenal a 5-0 advantage.

Arsenal’s next match of the 2007-08 English Premier League season will be against West Ham United on Saturday, September 29th. Arsenal will play visitors to West Ham United at Upton Park. Arsenal are slight favorites to win the match, considering the top football form displayed by Arsenal in recent weeks. West Ham United recently lost to Newcastle United 3-1 when they were visitors on Newcastle’s home pitch at St. James Park. Prior to that loss, they had 4 wins and 1 draw in the first 5 matches of the 2007-08 season. Definitely, it should be an interesting and exciting match.
