Barcelona FC: 2007-08 UEFA Champions League Cup Winners?

September 16th, 2007 By: Pe Le

In May 2007, AC Milan defeated Liverpool in Athens, Greece, to be crowned as the champions of the UEFA Champions League.

Whiel AC Milan hope to repeat their achievement with yet another Champions League title, oddsmakers are favoring Barcelona FC to become the champion of the UEFA Champions League in this upcoming 2007-2008 season. Barcelona FC seem to be the strongest squad on paper with Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard making improvements by adding French striker Thierry Henry, probably one of the most highlighted transfers of the season apart from David Beckham’s move to the LA Galaxy.

The addition of Thierry Henry to Barcelona has given the Catalonian soccer superstars a new nickname - The Fantastic Four, which is composed of Thierry Henry, Samuel Eto-o, Ronaldinho and Lionel Messi. With such talented soccer names in the Barcelona squad, which also include the likes of Deco, Andres Iniseta, Edmilson, Gianluca Zambrota, Giovani Dos Santos, Lilian Thuram, Eric Abidal, Carlos Puyol and Xavi Hernandez, there is no doubt that Barcelona will be capable of producing the goals necessary to lead their side to the top of the UEFA Champions League.Barcelona Superstars: Thierry Henry and Ronaldinho

After all, you need goals to win matches. And the more goals you can score, then certainly the more chances for your team to win. Barcelona’s Fantastic Four already combine for a total of career goals. Thierry Henry has around 250+ career goals. 2005-06 UEFA Club Footballer of the Year Ronaldinho has over 100+ career goals. 2005-06 UEFA Champions League Best Forward and Cameroon striker Samuel Eto’o has around 150+ career goals. World Soccer Young Player of the Year and Argentinian striker Lionel Messi is already on a hot streak in his young career with 26 career goals for Barcelona in 52 appearances, averaging 1 goal in every 2 matches. Lionel Messi is only 20 years old, and is surely capable of reaching his 100th career goal by the time Messi turns 23.

If Barecelona will be champions of the UEFA Champions League, it will be their 3rd UEFA Champions cup, having won it for the first time in the 1991-1992 season by beating Italian side UC Campdoria; and another in the 2005-2006, when they defeated Arsenal.

Barcelona will first have to survive the Group Stages of the 2007-08 UEFA Champions League. Barcelona will be matched in Group E along with French Ligue 1 Champions Lyon, Bundesliga Champions VfB Stuttgart and Scottish Premiere League runner-up Rangers FC. Only the top two teams of Group E will advance to the round of 16.

Barcelona begin their UEFA Champions League campaign with a match against Lyon on their home pitch in the Nou Camp at Barcelona, Spain, this Wednesday September 19, 2007.

If you want to bet on Barcelona vs. Lyon, oddsmakers look to pay out:

Barcelona: 4/9

Lyon: 13/2

Draw: 9/4

Current odds for who will become the UEFA Champions League Champions in Moscow on May 2008, include:

Barcelona: 5/1

Chelsea: 6/1

Manchester United: 7/1

Inter Milan: 8/1

AC Milan: 8/1
