Inter Milan Defeat PSV Eindhoven 2-0 in UEFA Champions League Group Stage Match
Inter Milan striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic drove in 2 goals to give Italian Serie A champions Inter Milan a 2-0 win against Dutch Eredivise league champions PSV Eindhoven in their group stage match of the UEFA Champions League tournament.
It was a slow start for Inter Milan, who looked tentative to open up their attack against the visiting PSV Eindhoven. However, Inter’s Luis Figo immediately dictated the pace at the midfield for Inter Milan, but it was PSV Eindhoven who had the first attempt on goal when PSV forward Jefferson Farfan evaded two Inter defenders and played the ball to the right side to team mate Kenneth Perez who unleashed a fierce strike that tested Inter Milan goalkeeper Julio Cesar.
The momentum quickly shifted to Inter Milan when a penalty was awarded by referee Kyros Vassaras for an awful challenge made by PSV’s Jan Kromkamp on Ibrahimovic inside the box. Ibrahimovic stepped up to take the spot kick and sent PSV keeper Heurelho Gomes the wrong way for his tenth UEFA Champions League goal and his first for Inter Milan. Boosting with confidence in their home pitch, Inter Milan began to dominate PSV, who seemed to have lost its steam after Inter had scored first.
Six minutes later, Ibrahimovic scored again to totally crush the confidence of the PSV side and send the Inter Milan fans in the San Siro into ecstasy. Inter Milan’s Luis Figo was released down the right by Javier Zanetti, and Figo released a deep cross for Ibrahimovic at the far post, who was able to head the ball over PSV keeper Heurelho Gomes through a very tight angle.
Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven tried their best to get back in the match with several attempts created by the likes of PSV forwards Jefferson Farfan, Kenneth Perez and Danko Lazovic leading the attack. However, Inter keeper Julio Cesar was alert to keep the Inter Milan goal unscathed.
Inter Milan were reduced to ten men when defender Christian Chivu was shown his second yellow card of the match, following a rash tackles on PSV’s Jason Culina. Inter Milan substitute David Suazo was also sent off after the final whistle following a heated tangle with PSV’s Carlos Salcido.
The red cards for Inter Milan’s Christian Chivu and David Suazo also mean that the two will be suspended for their October 23 UEFA Champions League group stage match when Inter Milan are visitors to Ukranian club CSKA Moskva.
PSV Eindhoven hope to win their next match when they host Group G leaders Fenerbahce at the end of October 2007.
