Manchester United Win Against Wigan Athletic
Manchester United: 4, Wigan Athletic: 0!
The scene on Saturday at Old Trafford was very festive as Manchester United scored 4 amazing goals against visitors Wigan Athletic to give them their 4th win of the season plus the lead atop the English Premier League with 20 points. However, Manchester United’s top standing in the Premiership only lasted less than 24 hours as Arsenal would collect 3 points on Sunday with a 3-2 win against Sunderland at the Emirates Stadium to overtake ManU with 22 points.
Nevertheless, it was a winning day for Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United, who were scoreless in the first half against a very stiff defensive Wigan Athletic side. Manchester United also were unfortunate to lose defender Nemanja Vidic after a clash of heads with Wigan Athletic’s Marcus Bent. Vidic had already complained about problems with his vision, and Manchester United club doctor Steve McNally didn’t want to risk further injury and advised United coach Sir Alex Ferguson to pull him off. John O’ Shea came in to substitute Vidic, but was substituted just after seven minutes when a leg muscle problem turned up. Sir Alex Ferguson was forced to make his 2nd subsitution of the match in the first half by giving Danny Simpson his Premiership debut.
On the start of the second half though, Manchester United seemed to make the necessary adjustments and put the game into a higher gear. In the 54th minute, Carlos Tevez put Manchester United ahead 1-0 after Tevez dribbled around the defense of Wigan Athletic and managed to fire a low shot into the goal to beat Wigan keeper Chris Kirkland. Cristiano Ronaldo added anothe goal just 5 minutes after when a cross from Ryan Giggs threw in a cross the was deflected around and eventually landed to the head of Ronaldo who was point-blank in front of an unguarded Wigan goal.
In the 76th minute, Cristiano Ronaldo made the score 3-0 when United striker Wayne Rooney perfectly palced a low cross right in the path of Ronaldo, who had to simply tap the ball in the back of the net. Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney scored his first Premiership goal of the season in the 82nd minute when he headed in a excellent cross from team mate Danny Simpson.
Manchester United hope to keep up the win streak in the Premiership when they visit Villa Park to go up against Aston Villa two weeks from now on October 20th. The Premiership will not have matches on the weekend of October 13 to give way for the UEFA Euro 2008 Qualifying matches. Manchester United players who will be representing their home countries and are expected to participate in this week’s coming UEFA Euro 2008 matches include Cristiano Ronaldo for Portugal, Edwin van Der Sar for Netherlands plus Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand for England.
