UEFA Euro 2008 Group B Qualifiers: It’s A Tight Race!

October 10th, 2007 By: Pe Le

There are exactly 4 matchdays left in the UEFA Euro 2008 Qualifiers, which means that there are points to be fought for, and eventually the top two teams of each group of the Euro 2008 Qualifiers will advance to the finals of Euro 2008 in Austria and Switzerland.

In Group B of the UEFA Euro 2008 Qualifiers, we have a very close race. So far in the standings, Scotland is the group leader with 21 points closely followed by Italy with 20 and France not so far behind with 19. Ukraine has 13 points. Lithuania has 10 points. Georgia has 7, and the Faroe Islands have yet to score a single point.

In the upcoming qualifiers for Group B of the UEFA Euro 2008 for October 13, we will have matches between Scotland vs. Ukraine, Faroe Islands vs. France and Italy vs. Georgia. 4 days after on October 17, it’ll be Ukraine vs. Faroe Islands, France vs. Lithuania and Georgia vs. Scotland.Franck Ribery of France

Scotland vs. Ukraine. Scotland wil be hosts to Ukraine on October 13 in whatlooks to be a must-win situation for Scotland if they want to maintain group leaders in the very competitive Group B. In their last meeting last November 2006, Ukraine defeated Scotland 2-0 when the Scots were visitors at Ukraine. This time around, Scotland will look to the home-pitch advantage to support their cause in going up against Ukraine, who has a roster of star footballers like Liverpool’s Andriy Voronin, and Chelsea’s Andriy Schevchenko. However, Ukraine will have to do without their creative midfielder Ruslan Rotan, who will miss both October matches of the UEFA Euro 2008 qualifiers due to an injury. Scotland hopes to get fine performances from their stars like Manchester United’s Darren Fletcher and Everton striker James McFadden.

Italy vs. Georgia. Italy look to have an easier task when they host Georgia. Italy has defeated Georgia 3-1 in an away match last November, and definitely the home pitch advantage should boost the performance of the Italians in order to make it difficult for Georgia. Of course, Italy, the 2006 World Cup Champions, have so much talent behind big soccer names like Fabio Cannavaro of Real Madrid, Alessandro Nesta of AC Milan, Luca Toni of Bayern Munich, plus Alessandro del Piero and 2007 FIFPro Goalkeeper of the Year Gianluigi Buffon of Juventus among others.

Faroe Islands vs. France. France will be visiting the Faroe Islands for the first time, and really must get the away win if they want to advance to the UEFA 2008 Euro Finals in Austria and Switzerland. France has animpeccable lineup, which includes Thierry Henry of Barcelona, Louis Saha of Manchester United, Patrick Vieira of Inter Milan, Franck Ribery of Bayern Munich and Nicolas Anelka of the Bolton Wanderers, and certainly these players look to provide the win that French coach Raymond Domenech needs if he still wants to keep his job.

France vs. Lithuania. While the match with Faroe Islands looks easy enough for France, having thrashed the Faroe Islands before 5-0, their October 17 match versus Lithuania will indeed be tougher. France will have the home pitch advantage, but then Lithuania has beaten France 1-0 before when the Lithuanians hosted the French side. Lithuania is also backed by some great soccer stars like top striker Tomas Danilevicius of Italian Serie A team Bologna FC and Miko of Scottish Premier League team Hearts.
