Spanish La Liga champions Real Madrid just needed 1 point to earn a qualification spot in the Final Round of 16, but a 3-2 loss to Werder Bremen at the Weser Stadium in Bremen, Germany, didn’t give them any points to advance. Instead, German Bundesliga club Werder Bremen improves their standing, and gives them a lifeline to fight for the 2 qualification slots from Group C of the Champions League.
Werder Bremen opened the scoring in the 5th minute with Markus Rosenberg turning a scrappy attempt into a goal after the Real Madrid defense was caught napping. On the 14th minute, Real Madrid found an equaliser with Robinho dribbling down the left side and given enough space to curl in a wonderful strike to find the far corner and beat Werder Bremen keeper Christian Vander.
Werder Bremen retook the lead 5 minutes before the first-half break when Werder striker Boubacar Sanogo made a fine volley-finish from a wonderful pass by team mate Marcus Rosenberg. The Stade de Gerland is the home pitch of French Ligue champions Olympique Lyonnais, and was the setting for a do-or-die Champions League group stage qualifying match against Spanish La Liga club Barcelona FC. Barcelona were on top of Group of the Champions League with 10 points while Lyon were struggling at the 3rd spot with 6 points, desperate for a positive result if they were to keep alive in the Champions League tournament.
Barcelona was without star strikers Thierry Henry and Samuel Eto’o, and star midfielder Ronaldinho was confined to the Barca bench. However, Barca head coach Frank Rijkaard still had 17-year old football phenom Bojan Krkic, Lionel Messi and Andres Iniseta to lead the Barca attack. Rijkaard’s decision was quickly rewarded on the 3rd minute when Barca forward Andres Iniesta stroked him a fine pass created by Bojan Krkic.
Lyon team captain Juninho Pernambucano scored with a free kick that curled to the far post past the reach of Barcelona keeper Victor Valdes to make the score 1-1.

FC Bayern Munich haven’t won in their last 3 Bundesliga matches.
FC Bayern Munich were held to its second consecutive 0-0 draw in the German Bundesliga. Last week, German Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund held the visiting Bayern Munich to a 0-0 draw. Just recently, it was Eintracht Frankfurt who kept Bayern Munich level at 0-0 in the Allianz Arena, FC Bayern’s home pitch.
Bayern Munich had several chances on goal, around 40 in fact, but then none of the attempts on goal could get past Eintracht Frankfurt’s goalkeeper Ola Nikolov. Bayern Munich;s scoring tandem of Luca Toni and Miroslav Klose, who are the top scorers of the German Bundesliga with 8 goals each, had several attempts on the Frankfurt goal, but without much success. At least, it gives a clean sheat to Bayern Munich goalkeeper and team captain Oliver Kahn.
Eventually, the match ended in a 0-0 draw, sharing 1 point each for Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt. Bayern Munich improve their record by one point for a total of 28 points to lead the German Bundesliga. However, a 2-1 win by Hamburg SV over Hertha BSC has improved Hamburg’s Bundesliga standings to 26 points, just 2 shy of Bayern Munich.
